It’s the people

It’s always nice to go somewhere for a certain desired experience- the touristy things that everyone suggests. I’ve gone to Belize specifically for the snorkeling, India to learn yoga, France to see the Eiffel Tower.

But what I’ve come to realize is I don’t care nearly as much for these things as I do the people I’ve met and grown to love while traveling. I thought I traveled for the experiences, but really, I travel for the people.

What makes a trip memorable and special for me is the strangers who turn into lifelong friends. The endless laughter while getting to know someone who, at first, seemed so different from you.

I’ve realized that I really don’t care about seeing the touristy stuff. The hikes for a good view are only worth it if the people around make it worth it. The snorkeling is cool, but 10x better if I’m with some friends. The yoga I learned was life-changing, but the girls I shared my experience with really made the difference for me.

Unlike my other trips, this had no real deadline and very few plans. So instead of visiting a place for a few days, meeting people, and having to part ways almost immediately, I’ve been blessed with the time to really settle into each place.

Enough time to find a little community. Enough time to become part of someone else’s. Enough time to share more than a few laughs, but a deep connection built on love and respect for each other and the world around us.

On this trip, I’ve prioritized quality time with people over checking off a list of things to do. And it’s made me appreciate human connection like nothing else ever has.

Because for me, it’s the people.
