Anxiety

What an umbrella term for so many feelings and emotions, right? I want to go sit with that group of girls and make friends but I’m too anxious. I want to complete my to-do list but it’s so long and overwhelming, and now I’m anxious. I want to start traveling but the thought of it makes me anxious.

What does being anxious really mean? It means to have fear of the uncertain future. I get anxious before putting myself out there because what if those girls don’t like me? I get anxious before completing my to-do list because what if I don’t finish it? I get anxious before any major life decision because how do I go on without knowing exactly how things will turn out? Anxiety is my brain telling me that uncertainty means danger. Which warrants my heart and mind to race, my palms to sweat, and panic to set in.

The only thing that helps me when I’m anxious is to come back to the present moment. To live right now, not in the future. To trust that the universe is looking out for me. To acknowledge that even in the worst case scenario, I will learn something and become stronger because of it. To have confidence in myself and my ability to make good choices. This is all easier said than done, but it’s possible.

Trust me, none of these things I have mastered. But one step at a time. One day at a time. The more I build confidence in myself, trust in the universe, and comfortability not having the answers, the less likely I am to be consumed with anxiety when uncertainty fogs my mind. Anxiety is my mind living in the future, I want to live here and now.
